Jakarta — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has stated that merchants at Pasar Tanah Abang have experienced sales growth of approximately 30 per cent.

“When I asked them, most merchants reported that improvements have begun. Although not yet as expected, the increase is around 20-30 per cent,” Pramono said.

Following his attendance at the “Jakarta Hijab Fest” at Pasar Tanah Abang in Central Jakarta on Thursday, Pramono noted that online retailers across various platforms are now the primary competitors for traditional market merchants.

In response, Pramono stated that many traders have begun selling online to expand their market reach.

The event was attended by officials from the Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) and several regional state-owned enterprises (BUMD). The clothing displayed at the festival was purchased directly from Tanah Abang merchants as a concrete show of support for local businesses.

Previously, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa conducted an inspection at Pasar Tanah Abang following speculation that the national economy was heading towards recession, with signs of declining market activity being cited as one suspected indicator.

“It turned out to be true that consumer purchasing power remains present, people are still shopping and the market is still bustling. When I arrived there, suddenly many people gathered. It means that around us there are still many people shopping,” he said.

He interpreted the crowds of shoppers at the market as a signal that the economy remains in good condition. As a result, he expressed optimism that Indonesia’s economy is far from risking recession.

“It means that consumer purchasing power appears to be improving and we are not in recession, let alone crisis. We are far from crisis. So our economy is performing well,” he said.
