Rubbish Piles Up Outside Hanura 3R Waste Processing Facility, Residents Worried About Disease
Jakarta – A pile of rubbish approximately one metre high outside the Hanura 3R waste processing facility (TPS3R) on Jalan Hanura Ketapang, Krukut, Taman Sari, West Jakarta, has raised concerns among nearby residents.
Besides producing a foul odour, the overflowing waste spilling onto the street is feared to be a source of disease transmission.
One resident living near the site, Roni (40), expressed concern about the conditions given his home’s proximity to the rubbish pile. He noted that in addition to soiling the street, the waste frequently emitted a pungent smell that disturbed residents. The presence of rubbish also attracted numerous flies that often entered homes.
Similar concerns were shared by another resident, Sukardi (38), who worried that the rubbish pile directly in front of his house could trigger illness. “If I catch a disease I’m frightened, especially with the rubbish sitting in the street like this. But if it’s just inside the TPS, I’m not so worried, it’s safer,” he explained.
In addition to the odour, the pile frequently produced maggots that soiled the street, particularly in the mornings. Sukardi stated that the waste accumulation outside the Hanura 3R facility had occurred over approximately the past week.
He suspected the situation arose because waste transportation from the 3R facility to the Bantargebang integrated processing facility (TPST) had been disrupted following a recent landslide.
“My hope is they’ll put it back inside, basically not on the street. If it’s on the street it causes problems—vehicles get stuck in traffic every day, when it rains people have accidents, motorcycles slip and fall,” he said.
