Rubbish Piles Overflow at Pulogebang 3R TPS, Residents Worried About Disease Spread
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Overflowing rubbish piles at the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Waste Processing Site (TPS 3R) on Rawa Bebek Street, Pulogebang, East Jakarta, spilling onto the roadside, are causing anxiety among residents over the spread of various diseases.
“This kind of rubbish makes us worried because it’s dirty, smelly, and can cause diseases like dengue fever, diarrhoea, or viruses,” said one local resident, Jayadi (38), in Pulogebang, East Jakarta, on Thursday.
According to him, the pungent smell from the rubbish is greatly disturbing residents and passing motorists.
“The smell is very pungent; we’re afraid it will become a source of disease. There are lots of flies, and sometimes rats too. Children or the elderly become vulnerable to illness if this situation is left unchecked,” Jayadi stated.
He said the condition of the rubbish piles at the site has been ongoing for a long time. Moreover, the situation has become even more worrying since restrictions were imposed at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java.
“So, no trucks come to collect it; that’s why it piles up, isn’t collected for a while, and now it’s piling up again,” Jayadi explained.
He also called on the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to immediately find real solutions to handle the waste problem in his residential area.
“Why do residents have to keep complaining before it’s followed up? There needs to be real action, including long-term measures; waste issues are difficult,” Jayadi remarked.
“It should be followed up immediately. We hope the rubbish is collected by officials so the piles don’t grow even larger,” said Sunaryo.
He admitted to feeling uncomfortable every time he passes the road due to the disturbing rubbish smell.
“When passing there, I have to cover my nose; the smell penetrates the mask when it’s like this,” Sunaryo said.
Based on observations, rubbish was seen piling up beside the Pulogebang TPS 3R building. Scattered rubbish was also visible across the street.
Several motorcyclists passing by appeared uncomfortable. They covered their noses due to the pungent rubbish smell.
“The government is encouraging the public to start reducing waste volume and carrying out sorting from the source, namely households, to manage disposal at the Bantargebang TPST,” said East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin at the East Jakarta Mayor’s Office on Tuesday (7/4).
He mentioned that his office is collaborating with the Ciracas Plastic Recycling Centre (PDUP) to manage inorganic waste.
In addition, the Waste Bank Task Force (Satgas) in every sub-district, established through East Jakarta Mayor’s Circular Number e-0005/SE/2026, is being optimised in its role.
The task force is responsible for coordinating the delivery of inorganic waste from Waste Bank Units to the PDUP Ciracas, while also reporting activities through the provided online system.
