Rubbish in the drainage channels or waste shafts in the Tambora Rental Flats, West Jakarta, has piled up as far as the disposal area on the sixth floor of the building. This accumulation is caused by the ongoing restrictions on waste transport fleets from Jakarta to the Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) Bantargebang in Bekasi, West Java. Based on observations by Kompas.com at the site on Tuesday afternoon (7/4/2026), the Tambora Rental Flats, which consist of 16 floors, use a shaft system (trash chute), a vertical waste disposal channel from the upper floors of the building to the ground floor. Residents simply drop household waste from the 16th floor down to the ground floor through a door that can be opened and closed. However, the waste collection area on the ground floor appears to be full and has not been cleared due to the limited availability of rubbish truck fleets. As a result, newly discarded waste from above gets stuck in the channel and eventually piles up, particularly at the disposal points in Towers B and C. In the waste shaft disposal area of Tower B, rubbish has been stuck for approximately one month, leading to accumulation up to the third floor of the flats. Meanwhile, the situation is worse in Tower C, where rubbish has piled up to the sixth floor. Consequently, residents living on the lower floors can no longer dispose of their waste through the shaft and must go down to carry their rubbish directly to the ground floor. This condition was confirmed by the Manager of the Tambora Rental Flats UPRS I, Gatot Nurferianto. “If it piles up more, it will reach even higher. It’s blocked; the rubbish can’t come out— that’s the current condition,” Gatot said when met by Kompas.com at the Tambora Rental Flats on Tuesday. In total, there are three waste shaft disposal points available in the Tambora Rental Flats. However, due to the increasingly uncontrollable rubbish accumulation, the flats’ management has temporarily closed two shaft points, leaving only three operational TPS (Temporary Disposal Sites) areas at present.
