South Jakarta – Residents of RT 11, RW 7 Gandaria Utara, Kebayoran Baru, have taken security into their own hands by installing three digital-access gates at the entrances to a narrow residential alley to restrict entry and exit at certain times. RT 11 chief Imam Basori, known as Ibas, said the system was introduced in response to residents’ concerns after motorcycle thefts in the area. Each gate is equipped with a card-tap device usable only by registered residents. Access cards are issued per family (KK), so a single card covers all gates for the family, particularly after midnight WIB.

Funding comes from RT operational funds provided by the government and voluntary contributions from residents; no third party or contractor was involved in the installation. “So everything is self-reliant. We cut the metal ourselves, weld it ourselves,” he said.

The gates began operating after their official inauguration on Sunday 1 March 2026. “People ask, ‘What is the budget for this?’ They always want to know. We reply, ‘Here is the link for you to buy your own. When it’s time to install, I’ll set it up for you.’ So there’s no need to hire anyone,” he added.

He also opened the possibility of cooperation with other RTs to connect access at alley borders for better surveillance. Beyond the digital gates, he plans to add GPS trackers to residents’ vehicles. “Next time I will allocate from the operational budget to provide one GPS per motorcycle. Once all the gates are finished, there will be further innovations,” he said.

Residents hope that the combination of restricted access and GPS tracking will reduce vehicle theft in the densely populated neighbourhood.
