RSCM provides intensive medical treatment to KontraS activist Andrie Yunus, who sustained chemical burns to his face and multiple body parts following an attack involving caustic liquid by an unknown person.

According to Yoga Nara, Legal and Communications Manager at RSCM, the patient arrived at RSCM’s Emergency Department (ED) in the early hours of Friday, 13 March, at approximately midnight.

“With complaints of burns to the face, neck, chest, back, and both arms, accompanied by vision impairment in the right eye,” said Yoga in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Upon arrival at the ED, the medical team immediately conducted preliminary examination and stabilisation measures.

“pH indicator examination revealed exposure to acidic chemical substance in the wound area,” Yoga stated.

As initial treatment, the medical team performed irrigation or washing of the affected area to reduce the chemical substance’s effects and normalise tissue condition.

Yoga said that upon ED admission, the initial diagnosis indicated burns affecting approximately 24 per cent of the body due to inflammatory reaction from the caustic liquid contact with skin.

“The burns were particularly located in the facial area, especially on the right side, including the right eye, both hands, and the chest area,” said Yoga.

Subsequently, according to medical assessment by the attending physician, the medical evaluation was revised, indicating that Andrie Yunus sustained burns affecting approximately 20 per cent of the body surface and severe chemical trauma to the right eye with acute phase severity level three.

“This condition resulted in sharp vision decline and corneal surface damage,” Yoga explained.

To address this condition, he stated that the patient underwent damaged tissue debridement on the right eye and amniotic membrane transplantation to protect the eye surface and support the healing process.

The patient was subsequently admitted to the High Care Unit (HCU) for burns to receive comprehensive monitoring and further care by a multidisciplinary medical team consisting of ophthalmologists, reconstructive plastic surgeons, and emergency medicine specialists.
