MANILA (AP): The Philippine government is considering the
establishment of a special economic zone, primarily for
information technology companies, within a 64-hectare (158-acre)
site at Fort Bonifacio, a former military camp near Manila's
financial district of Makati.
This was disclosed Wednesday by Rogelio Singson, chairman of
the government's Bases Conversion Development Authority.
The authority, along with a consortium led by local holding
concern Metro Pacific Corp., is developing 214 hectares (528
acres) of the 440-hectare (1,086-acre) Fort Bonifacio into a
corporate city.
Singson said President Joseph Estrada has already ordered a
study of various ways of maximizing the benefits of the 64-
hectare (158-acre) area inside the military complex.
