MANILA (AFP): Thirteen foreign companies have been contracted by the Philippine government to implement power interconnection projects costing more than US$318 million, the state-owned National Power Corp. (NPC) said here yesterday.
The projects involve constructing submarine cables and overhead transmission lines for a proposed 200-megawatt grid serving the two central islands of Cebu and Leyte and a 400- megawatt grid serving Leyte and the main Philippine island of Luzon, NPC president Guido Delgado said.
For the Leyte-Luzon project, a consortium led by Swiss-based ABB Power Systems AB and Marubeni Corp. of Japan will provide and install a converter, electrode and cable terminal stations at a cost of $127.64 million.
A Japanese group, composed of Nissho Iwai Corp., Kanematsu Corp., FujiKura Ltd. and Hitachi Cable Ltd. will install a portion of the submarine cable, which will carry power from a plant in Leyte to Luzon substations, at a cost of $68.24 million.
