MANILA (AFP): Thirteen foreign companies have been contracted
by the Philippine government to implement power interconnection
projects costing more than US$318 million, the state-owned
National Power Corp. (NPC) said here yesterday.

The projects involve constructing submarine cables and
overhead transmission lines for a proposed 200-megawatt grid
serving the two central islands of Cebu and Leyte and a 400-
megawatt grid serving Leyte and the main Philippine island of
Luzon, NPC president Guido Delgado said.

For the Leyte-Luzon project, a consortium led by Swiss-based
ABB Power Systems AB and Marubeni Corp. of Japan will provide and
install a converter, electrode and cable terminal stations at a
cost of $127.64 million.

A Japanese group, composed of Nissho Iwai Corp., Kanematsu
Corp., FujiKura Ltd. and Hitachi Cable Ltd. will install a
portion of the submarine cable, which will carry power from a
plant in Leyte to Luzon substations, at a cost of $68.24 million.
