        "content": "<p>RP awards power projects<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (AFP): Thirteen foreign companies have been contracted<br>\nby the Philippine government to implement power interconnection<br>\nprojects costing more than US$318 million, the state-owned<br>\nNational Power Corp. (NPC) said here yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The projects involve constructing submarine cables and<br>\noverhead transmission lines for a proposed 200-megawatt grid<br>\nserving the two central islands of Cebu and Leyte and a 400-<br>\nmegawatt grid serving Leyte and the main Philippine island of<br>\nLuzon, NPC president Guido Delgado said.<\/p>\n<p>For the Leyte-Luzon project, a consortium led by Swiss-based<br>\nABB Power Systems AB and Marubeni Corp. of Japan will provide and<br>\ninstall a converter, electrode and cable terminal stations at a<br>\ncost of $127.64 million.<\/p>\n<p>A Japanese group, composed of Nissho Iwai Corp., Kanematsu<br>\nCorp., FujiKura Ltd. and Hitachi Cable Ltd. will install a<br>\nportion of the submarine cable, which will carry power from a<br>\nplant in Leyte to Luzon substations, at a cost of $68.24 million.<\/p>",
