Rotterdam mosque vandalised by group as complaint filed
A group of people attacked a mosque in Rotterdam last night, the Islamic Foundation Netherlands (ISN) said on Friday (29/5). The Mevlana Mosque was damaged by six unidentified perpetrators around 22:40 GMT (05:40 WIB on 30 May), ISN stated in a press release. Mosaic walls were vandalised, with perpetrators throwing beer bottles at the building and urinating on the front. The statement said mosque officials repeatedly contacted police, but officers only arrived after the attackers had left the area. The statement highlighted that worshippers feel increasingly threatened due to rising attacks targeting Muslims and mosques, noting that police responders did not consider the incident a ‘threat requiring immediate intervention’. It expressed confusion over the police assessment and stressed the importance of ensuring worshippers’ safety and protecting their right to practice their faith without fear under all circumstances. ISN also noted that the delayed police response has raised serious concerns, and they have filed an official criminal complaint, requesting the incident be treated as a priority investigation.
