From Rakyat Merdeka
Mr. M Yusuf of South Jakarta must be wrong when he said in his
letter to this newspaper on June 11, 2001 that only the army was
fit to hold the position of the Indonesian Military's commander-
in-chief.
History shows that in a span of 30 years many human rights
violations have been committed by the Indonesian Military (TNI)
with a member of the army occupying the position of its
commander-in-chief.
In my opinion, Widodo AS of the Indonesian Navy has
successfully led the TNI and ensured that it has stayed on the
right track. For Indonesia, the position of the Indonesian
Military's commander-in-chief must be assigned to the Army, the
Navy and the Air Force on a rotating basis. If it is now the turn
of the Air Force to get this position, then let them have it.
Otherwise, questions may arise.
