Root Causes of Flooding in Bali's Legian and Seminyak Areas
The Deputy Regent of Badung, Bagus Alit Sucipta, personally inspected the flood-affected areas along Jalan Dewi Sri, Legian, and Jalan Kunti, Seminyak, Bali. He stated that the flooding was caused by the high water level in the Tukad Mati River due to extreme rainfall, as well as the low elevation of the area. “One of the challenges is that this area is low-lying, and when we try to pump the water into the Tukad Mati River, the river is already high. So, the water is discharged there, but it flows back into the residential areas,” said Bagus Alit Sucipta, as reported by detikBali on Tuesday (24 February 2026). The Badung Regency Government will continue to carry out normalisation work to increase the river’s capacity. In addition, several drainage projects using box culverts up to 2 metres in size will soon be installed in critical areas such as Jalan Dewi Sri IV, Jalan Pandawa, and Campuhan. “I believe that within the next few months, these will be installed, which will minimise the recurrence of such situations next year. The steps we are taking are to accelerate the drainage system so that, if there is a high water level, it will be quickly absorbed or discharged towards the Tukad Mati River,” Bagus added. The evacuation of residents and tourists, according to the politician, who is affectionately known as Gus Bota, is still ongoing in the villas around the area and is proceeding smoothly thanks to the coordination of the joint team from the BPBD (Regional Disaster Management Agency), Tagana (Disaster Response Volunteers), and local authorities. Although the floodwaters were initially high, officials have confirmed that the situation is now under control and the water is gradually receding. “The evacuation was reported by the village head, and everything went quickly and smoothly. I also checked the villas or lodging places, and there are no more puddles,” explained the former member of the Bali DPRD (Regional People’s Representative Council). Read the full story here.
