Robber shot dead, five others held

JAKARTA (JP): Police officers shot dead a man and arrested five others who were caught red-handed mugging a motorist on Jl. Setia Kawan Ujung, Duri Pulo subdistrict, Gambir, Central Jakarta, on Thursday.

Gambir subprecinct police detective chief Second. Insp. Bayu Dewantoro identified the shot robber as a vagrant, Ali Akbar, 28. who, along with his five accomplices, had just robbed Joni Nuriman, 38, a resident of Angke subdistrict, Tambora, West Jakarta. He had been riding a motorcycle with his wife.

Bayu said one of the robbers held a knife to Joni's neck as he stopped at Jl. Setia Kawan Ujung traffic lights, and ordered him to hand over his wallet.

The frightened victim handed over his wallet containing Rp 106,000 in cash and several documents. But, as the six robbers were about to escape, the victim suddenly shouted "thieves!", Bayu said.

He said two detectives from Gambir police subprecinct, Brig. Sartiono and First. Adj. Brig. Agus Wiyono, heard the victim's shouts and immediately chased the escaping robbers.

"My officer shot dead one of the robbers to prevent them escaping. After seeing one of their number collapse, the other five stopped running and surrendered themselves," Bayu said. (01)
