Road development in Greater Jakarta
Road development in Greater Jakarta
JAKARTA (JP): West Java Governor H. Nuriana has said that
Jakarta and its satellite cities -- Bekasi, Tangerang and Bogor
-- share the responsibility for road development in their border
areas.
"Some are funded by budget of each regional administration
while others receive funding from the national budget through the
Public Works Ministry," Nuriana was quoted by Antara as saying.
Roads in Kali Malang, Pondok Gede and Bekasi were already too
narrow to accommodate the heavy traffic passing through the area,
the governor said.
Nuriana said that the poor condition of the roads was a
result, primarily, of the increasing number of Jakartans living
in the three satellite cities. Jakarta and the three satellite
cities are popularly known as Greater Jakarta.
"The many people commuting have caused the deterioration of
the roads," he said. "Therefore, the Jakartans should also be
responsible for the damage to West Java roads," said Nuriana.
Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said recently that
Jakarta's housing and transportation development could not be
separated from that of its surrounding cities.
Surjadi said a master plan for public transportation in
Jakarta and its surrounding areas is now being prepared and
should be implemented soon. (30)
