RKB teacher shortage, Bandung Regency: Maximum 40 students per class for SPMB 2026
Bandung Regency, West Java — The Bandung Regency Government is weighing options to limit the number of students in a single teaching group (rombel) to a maximum of 40 ahead of the 2026 Sistem Penerimaan Murid Baru (SPMB).
Regent Dadang Supriatna said the policy is a move to manage class size so that teaching and learning in classrooms is not too crowded and remains effective.
‘Enough of inefficiency; there are lean classes and overcrowded classes; it’s confusing for Bandung Regency. We will set 40 people per class,’ he said in Bandung on Wednesday.
He explained the cap will have a direct impact on teacher effectiveness and the quality of interaction with students in the classroom.
‘Moreover, the crowded classes influence the needs for teaching staff and the availability of classroom space in schools,’ he explained.
In addition, the policy relates to the ongoing need for Ruang Kelas Baru (RKB) in Bandung Regency, which remains high.
‘Secondly, our new classrooms (RKB) still require around 2,000,’ he said. ‘If that is merged or limited to 40 students, I think the shortage would be around 100 to 200 new classrooms.’
The regent said that regulating the number of students per class is necessary to balance school capacity with the quality of learning on the ground.
‘So that there are clear maximum or minimum limits, so there is no confusion,’ he added.
The regent emphasised that education must remain a priority, ensuring all children have access to schooling without obstacles.
‘Everyone must go to school. Please, let us all cooperate to ensure that every child required to attend school can do so,’ he said.
The Bandung Regency government hopes that the cap on class size will improve teaching quality, while creating a more effective and conducive learning process in schools.
