RI's nuclear power plant
RI's nuclear power plant
In response to Arief Budiman's article in The Jakarta Post (Feb.9, 1996) Keith Bradley ended his letter with "my company is proud to have developed and designed the CANDU reactor" which Canadians and Torontonians have enjoyed for the past 30 years.
As program coordinator of the Indonesia Forum for Environment (Walhi) I have maintained my position for 12 years by joining the Indonesian Anti Nuclear Coalition. The high risk involved with a nuclear reactor is the primary reason for the position I hold. Unlike Canada, Indonesian human resources still lack the discipline required to manage a nuclear reactor.
To my knowledge, the power plant is going to be sited on Mt. Muria in Central Java. A macro study indicates that the Muria volcanic complex is seismically active, which adds to the potential risk.
I would like to invite Keith Bradley to have an open discussion with us to share our experiences and knowledge. I especially need his help to get information on his experience about a nuclear power plant on the site mentioned.
While awaiting his response, I will be discussing the subject with my Walhi colleagues and through my environmental network.
