Right Lane Usage on Toll Roads: Avoid Casual Use
SOLO — The proper use of the right lane on toll roads remains a concern as many drivers still do not use it according to its intended function. According to standard driving rules and etiquette, the right lane is specifically for overtaking or passing other vehicles. Misusing the lane can disrupt traffic flow and increase the risk of accidents. Sony Susmana, Training Director of Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia (SDCI), stated that toll road driving regulations are well-established and all users must adhere to them to ensure order and safety. ‘One common misconception is the use of the right lane. Regulations state it should only be used when overtaking or passing other vehicles, and even then, with careful calculation,’ Sony told Kompas.com on Sunday, 31 May 2026. He explained that drivers should not linger in the right lane after overtaking. ‘It should not be used for more than two minutes, and the lane must be clear; it should not be used for staying or idling. If you don’t have a speed advantage of at least 20 km/h over the vehicle you’re passing, it’s better not to overtake as it can cause phantom traffic,’ he said. Sony added that phantom traffic refers to congestion that occurs without physical obstructions such as accidents or road narrowing. Therefore, drivers are urged to use the right lane strictly for overtaking and return to the left lane immediately after the manoeuvre. With disciplined traffic behaviour, toll road traffic can remain smooth and safe for all users.
