REPUBLICA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The government’s policy of capping the take from online ride-hailing platforms at a maximum of 8 per cent is welcomed as it provides economic protection for workers in the digital informal sector. The move is said to strengthen the position of online motorcycle taxi drivers within the app-based economy that continues to grow.

Secretary General of Advokasi Rakyat untuk Nusantara (ARUN), Bungas T Fernando Duling, assessed that the implementation of Presidential Regulation Number 27 of 2026 reflects the state’s alignment with increasing drivers’ income. Through the regulation, online ojek drivers are now entitled to receive around 92 per cent of the revenue from each trip.

“Amid the spirit of National Awakening Day, we see a ‘new dawn’ for online transport workers. This policy of President Prabowo Subianto is solid evidence that the government’s commitment does not stop at rhetoric, but truly appears in the spirit of empowering the people’s income. This is a revival for millions of ojol drivers to achieve more equitable welfare,” said the man known as Nando, on Wednesday (20/5/2026).

According to Nando, the policy relates to constitutional economic principles as set out in Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution. He believes online transportation has become an important sector affecting the livelihoods of the wider public, so state intervention is necessary to maintain balance between the interests of business players and the welfare of workers.

“When the state ensures drivers take home 92 per cent of the income, that is where the mandate of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution is truly carried out. This is the spirit of mutual cooperation and genuine familial solidarity. We are rising from the distorted digital system toward a more humane and socially just ecosystem,” he said.

ARUN also commended the platform operators for being responsive in implementing government provisions. The organisation notes that compliance by app companies in adjusting partners’ revenue schemes is an important indicator of the sustainability of the national online transport ecosystem.

In addition to increased earnings, Nando emphasised the importance of strengthening social protection for drivers, including integration into BPJS Kesehatan and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan so that the welfare of informal sector workers is further guaranteed.

“The spirit of national awakening is the spirit of economic sovereignty. As a fairer system operates, we are laying the first stone for the economic independence of ordinary people,” he said.
