A female student with the initials F (23) was attacked while waiting for her thesis presentation at the Sultan Syarif Kasim Islamic University (UIN Suska) in Pekanbaru, Riau. The Riau Police have assured that they will investigate the case thoroughly.

“Investigators from the Pekanbaru Police Criminal Investigation Unit and the Bina Widya Police Station will investigate this case thoroughly,” said the Head of Public Relations of the Riau Police, Commissioner Zahwani Pandra Arsyad, in Pekanbaru City, Thursday (23/2/2026).

Pandra said that the perpetrator, with the initials R (23), has been secured at the Bina Widya Police Station for further investigation. The perpetrator is charged with Article 469 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning assault.

“The penalty is 12 years in prison,” he said.

The police have conducted a crime scene investigation for further investigation. A number of witnesses were also questioned to clarify the criminal incident.

On the same occasion, the Vice Rector III of UIN Suska Riau, Harris Simaremare, expressed his concern over the attack that occurred on campus.

“We express our concern for the incident that occurred on our campus in the Faculty of Sharia and Islamic Law, of course, we also do not want this to happen during Ramadan,” said Harris.

Regarding the incident, the university administration has handed over the legal process of the perpetrator entirely to the police. On the other hand, the university administration will also take action against the perpetrator, who is also a student at UIN Suska, in accordance with the applicable code of ethics.

“We are committed to upholding the code of ethics on campus and we leave the legal process entirely and as transparently as possible to the authorities,” added Harris.

The campus has ensured that the perpetrator will be subject to the harshest sanctions for his actions.

“The campus internally has rules in the form of a code of ethics. But if it is a criminal case, usually this student will automatically receive the harshest ethical punishment,” he concluded.
