Riau Police Chief Orders Full Alert for Godzilla El Niño
Riau Police Chief Irjen Pol Herry Heryawan has ordered his subordinates to increase alertness in anticipation of the potential emergence of the Super El Niño, or ‘Godzilla’ El Niño. Irjen Herry Heryawan also requested that his ranks maintain full alert status to counter the threat of forest and land fires (karhutla) resulting from the Super El Niño.
This was conveyed by Irjen Herry Heryawan in his presentation titled ‘Sense of Crisis and Adaptive Policing Strategy in Facing Economic Uncertainty and Public Order Dynamics’ at the Siak Police Resort.
In his presentation, the two-star general also urged all ranks, particularly the Community Guidance and Security Non-Commissioned Officers (Bhabinkamtibmas), to strengthen early detection and enhance direct communication with the public.
“The potential for karhutla must be anticipated from the outset. I request that all personnel actively go to the field, provide education, and ensure there are no more instances of land clearing by burning. This is part of our commitment to upholding ecological justice,” emphasised Irjen Herry on Tuesday (21/4/2026).
Anticipating Fuel Price Surge Turmoil
In addition, the Police Chief requested that ranks heighten their sense of crisis in facing global uncertainty situations stemming from geopolitical tensions that impact regional economic stability, particularly regarding fluctuations in staple goods prices and energy distribution.
He instructed intelligence functions and the Food Task Force to tighten surveillance to prevent hoarding and distribution disruptions.
“We must not be complacent about potential social unrest. Oversight of staple goods and fuel distribution must be conducted strictly to avoid unrest in society,” he stated.
On that occasion, the Police Chief also introduced the mikropolis approach as a policing strategy based on the smallest social units, supported by accurate data to detect potential conflicts early.
This approach is deemed effective in responding to various social issues such as potential waves of layoffs, land disputes, and other social dynamics through dialogue and mediation patterns.
In closing his directives, the Police Chief invited all elements of local government and society to strengthen collaboration in maintaining regional stability.
“Security is the foundation of development. With good communication and swift responses, we ensure Riau remains safe, comfortable, and conducive,” concluded Irjen Herry.
