RI worker may face hanging in KL

JAKARTA: An Indonesian migrant worker could be sentenced to death by hanging in Kuala Lumpur if a court there finds him guilty of killing Malaysian Elizabeth Wong Oi Chon, 47, a non- governmental organization (NGO) reported on Sunday.

Hasanuddin Sinring, 22, born in Bugis in South Sulawesi, was charged along with two Filipino suspects with violating Article 302 of Malaysia's Penal Code over the murder of Chon.

The NGO, Migrant Care, did not state the motive for the killing that took place on Oct. 31 last year.

On Feb. 26, the Magistrate Court ruled that the case of Hasanuddin -- who worked for a Sabah-based transportation firm, Canton Transportation -- be brought before the High Court, the organization said. During his trials, the suspect has been represented by Malaysian lawyer Razak Alimin.

Migrant Care urged the Indonesian government to be proactive in providing defense assistance for Hasanuddin, so as to ensure a fair trial. --JP
