RI supplies 43 percent of world CPO market

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia accounted for some 43 percent of the world`s crude palm oil (CPO) production totalling 36.5 million tons and Malaysia for 43.3 percent, Astra Agro Lestari (AALI) director Julie Syaftari said here on Friday.

The rest was contributed by Nigeria, Thailand, Colombia and other countries.

Julie said the world`s CPO production in 2006 was estimated at 36.5 million tons or an increase by 8 percent if compared with the figure in the previous year.

"Indonesia`s CPO production is predicted to increase by 12 percent this year to 15.7 million tons," Julie said adding that Malaysia`s production was estimated to increase by 6 percent to 15.8 million tons.

Malaysia`s CPO consumption is projected to increase by 17 percent while that of Indonesia by 6 percent.

In the first semester of 2006, AALI`s CPO sales reached 1.857 trillion or an increase by 17.6 percent compared with that in the previous year. The net profit it gained was recorded at 414.7 billion or an increase by 7.6 percent.

Julie said on Monday that PT Astra Agro Lestari`s net profit reached Rp414.7 billion in the first semester this year or was up by 7.6 percent from Rp385.5 billion in the same period last year.

"The achievement made by the company cannot be separated from improvements in sales performance," Julie Syaftarie.

PT Astra Agro Lestari is a subsidiary of automotive industry PT Astra International and is operating in agro-business.

Julie said the company`s achievement in the financial as well as operational sectors meanwhile were inseparable from the company`s capability in maintaining the productivity rate of its fields amid the hike of operational cost and price of field and plant supporting needs following fuel price rise.

"The biggest contribution came from crude palm oil sales comprising 86 percent while the rest was contributed by derivative products such as rubber," he said.(*)
