RI maid jailed for abuse
HONG KONG: An Indonesian maid was sentenced to three months in
jail for abusing a baby girl who was under her care, a report
said on Saturday.
Ade Sartika-Ningsih, 27, was jailed on Friday for mistreating
her employer's four-month old baby by holding her upside down and
shaking her repeatedly while her parents were away, said the
English language newspaper South China Morning Post.
The maid's action was captured by a hidden camera installed by
the employers, whose suspicions were aroused by the infant's loss
of appetite and the occasional swelling in her face, said the
newspaper.
Defense lawyer Timmy Yip said the baby's medical report
suggests she didn't suffer any substantial injuries. He added the
maid was paid only HK$2,400 (US$308) a month and was given no
days off, said the newspaper.
But magistrate Abu Bakar Bin Wahab said the maid should not
have mistreated a baby no matter what her employers had done to
her, said the newspaper. --AP
