RI maid faces stoning
DUBAI (AFP): An Islamic tribunal in the United Arab Emirates
has ordered a pregnant Indonesian maid to be stoned to death for
adultery, a newspaper reported on Monday.
The same court in the Indian Ocean emirate of Fujairah
acquitted her Muslim Indian lover in absentia, Al-Khaleej daily
said. The man has reportedly fled the country.
But Karteen Karikender, 35, received the maximum sentence
from the Shariah court on Sunday. She was arrested after the
police were informed she was pregnant out of wedlock.
In Abu Dhabi, the Indonesian embassy said it had not been
informed of the case. "If the verdict is not final, we are going
to appeal and hire legal aid to assist her in the court," a
spokesman said.
