Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and Iceland hope to realize an agreement on cooperation in a geothermal development project in 2008, the Foreign Ministry said.

Indonesia was hoping the cooperation agreement could be implemented when the two countries mark the 25th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, the ministry said in a statement here Monday.

To follow up on negotiations on the cooperation, the Indonesian embassy in Oslo was planning to organize a visit by Iceland`s geothermal businessmen to Indonesia late next month.

The geothermal project would be made a priority by the two countries because they both had large geothermal potentials.

The ministry said around 72 percent of the need for electricity and heaters in Iceland was fulfilled by geothermal energy while in Indonesia the use of geothermal energy was still around three percent of its potential.

It said Iceland investors had expressed their readiness during the Indonesia-Iceland Geothermal Forum in Reykjavik on September 12-13, to enter into concrete cooperation in the sector with Indonesia.

Iceland`s president and industry minister had given their full support to the commitment conveyed during their meeting with the Indonesian energy minister in Reykjavik.

During the forum Indonesia`s state oil company Pertamina signed a memorandum of understanding with Reykjavik Energy on geothermal development in Indonesia, the ministry said.(*)
