Temasek Looks to Merge BII, Danamon
Singapore’s state-owned investment company, Temasek Holdings Pte, may merge its two Indonesian banks into the country's fifth largest to meet ownership rules and boost their competitiveness, Bloomberg News reported on Friday (14/9/07). PT Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII) will hire advisers to draft a recommendation for the merger, president director Henry Ho said Wednesday in an interview.

Govt. Seeks Level Retail Playing Field
The government is planning legislation aimed at ensuring fair competition in the retail sector where large operators, including foreign companies, have been squeezing smaller, local companies, Trade Minister Mari Pangestu said Wednesday (12/9/07). Pangestu said the regulation will shortly be signed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and is likely to be issued next month.

2007 Worker Remittances Seen Up
Money sent home by Indonesians working overseas is likely to rise 41% to $4.8 billion this year from last year as more workers seek jobs abroad, an official said Thursday (13/9/07). Arini Rahyuwati, who heads a unit monitoring workers remittances at the state agency for overseas workers, said Indonesian workers overseas sent $3.4 billion home last year.

RI, Iceland to realize geothermal cooperation accord in 2008
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and Iceland hope to realize an agreement on cooperation in a geothermal development project in 2008, the Foreign Ministry said. Indonesia was hoping the cooperation agreement could be implemented when the two countries mark the 25th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, the ministry said in a statement here Monday.

ADB revises up RI growth forecast to 6.2 percent
Indonesia's economy is expected to register higher growth this year and ahead as a revival in domestic demand continues to drive more consumption and investment, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) says in its latest economic outlook. The ADB revised upwards its 2007 growth forecast for Indonesia to 6.2 percent from 6.0 percent previously, and its 2008 estimate to 6.4 percent from 6.3 percent.

Australia extends loan to Indonesia to rebuild roads
Sydney (ANTARA News) - Australia will extend a 300 million AUD (close to 252 million USD) interest-free loan to Indonesia to help rebuild roads destroyed by the 2004 tsunami. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said that the loan was part of the 1 billion AUD Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Reconstruction and Development Programme. The funding will support the upgrade of 1,000km of roads and about 4.5 km of bridges, mainly in Indonesia's eastern region.
