RI holds up in Asian badminton
MANILA, Philippines (AP): Top seed Xia Xuanze of China
overwhelmed Chun Sae-do of South Korea 15-8, 15-2 yesterday to
advance into the round of 16 in the boys singles competition in
the first Asian Junior Badminton Championship.
Second-seeded Ignatius Rudy of Indonesia advanced by besting
Sachin Ratti of India 15-5, 15-0. Third-seeded Taufik Hidayat of
Indonesia defeated Cai Yun of China, 15-5, 15-11, while Chen Hong
of China, who shares Hidayat's ranking, beat Arif Rosidi of
Indonesia 15-9, 15-6.
In the girls competition, top seed Yu Hua of China beat Wong
Man-ching of Hong Kong 11-1, 11-0, while second-seeded Peng Juyu
of China outclassed Woo Pui Kuan of Malaysia 11-5, 11-5.
In the boys doubles competition, the top-seeded pair of Chan
Chong Ming and Jeremy Gan of Malaysia triumphed over Sri Lankans
Chintika and Shudharham, 15-8, 15-7. Second-seeded Xuanze and
Chen Hong of China won 15-1, 15-4 over Jalil Mahmud and Abhiut of
Bangladesh.
In the girls doubles, top-seeded Yang Wei and Gao Ling of
China used only 37 minutes to beat A. Zalina and Z. Salma of
Pakistan 15-2, 15-0.
Second-seeded Lee Kyung-won and Park Seon-yeon of South Korea
defeated India's Swetha and Radhka 15-2, 15-4.
The competition, which began Monday, includes teams from
Singapore, Iran, Macau, India, the Philippines, Vietnam,
Pakistan, Cambodia, Nepal, Burma, Bangladesh, Kazakstan and
Syria.
