RI cartoonists win

TOKYO (Antara): Five Indonesian cartoonists have won three prizes at 21st Yomiuri International Cartoon Contest held by Japan's leading newspaper, Yomiuri Shimbun.

Zainal Abidin of Kendal, Central Java province, has won the Special Prize along with cartoonists from the United States, China and Japan.

Another cartoonist from Kendal, Mohammad Muslih, has earned the Excellent Prize, while three other cartoonists, Koestana and Jitet of Semarang, Central Java, and Misri, also from Kendal, have been awarded Honorable Mention each.

The prizes were awarded Friday.

As many as 9,012 works by 4,073 cartoonists from 68 countries were entered in this contest, which was divided into the general and junior categories.

In the general category, the prizes awarded are the Grand Prize, the Golden Prize, the Golden Prize for Free Event, the Special Prize, the Excellent Prize, Honorable Mention and Citation.

Alfons Vof of Belgium has been awarded the Golden Prize, taking home two million yen.
