Revealed: Failure of Mossad's Plan to Overthrow Iran's Government, Netanyahu Frustrated
Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, had a plan to spark public protests in Iran that would lead to the collapse of the Tehran government, according to a report by US media outlet, the New York Times. Mossad chief David Barnea met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a few days before the US and Israel initiated their war against Iran. He told Netanyahu that the agency would be able to rally Iranian opposition to achieve regime change. According to the report, which cites interviews with US and Israeli officials, Barnea also presented this proposal to senior US officials during a visit to Washington in mid-January. The plan was subsequently adopted by Netanyahu and Trump, although there were doubts among some senior American officials and Israeli military intelligence regarding the overthrow of the Iranian regime. According to US and Israeli officials, Mossad’s promises were used by Netanyahu to convince the US president that the collapse of the Iranian government was feasible. In the plan’s concept, the war would begin with the assassination of Iranian leaders, followed by a series of intelligence operations intended to drive regime change.
