Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded 147.67 million working people in February 2026, an increase of 1.896 million from February 2025. However, those in formal employment numbered only 59.93 million, or 40.58%, down 0.02 percentage points from February 2025.

From the total working population, the average wage for labourers/employees/staff in Indonesia stands at Rp 3.29 million per month, based on the February 2026 Sakernas results.

“Wages for male labourers reached Rp 3.55 million, higher than for female labourers at Rp 2.80 million,” states the BPS report, quoted on Thursday (7/5/2026).

Further, by business sector, workers in Financial and Insurance Activities receive the highest wage of Rp 5.05 million, while those in Arts, Other Service Activities, Household Activities, and International Organisations receive the lowest at Rp 2.00 million.

According to BPS, wage differences among workers are also evident based on gender and business sector characteristics. In general, male workers’ wages are higher than females’.

However, there are five business sectors where female workers’ wages exceed males’: Financial and Insurance Activities (Rp 5.13 million vs Rp 5 million); Mining and Quarrying (Rp 5.67 million vs Rp 4.91 million); Transportation and Storage (Rp 4.06 million vs Rp 3.97 million); Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities and Administrative and Support Service Activities (Rp 4 million vs Rp 3.96 million); and Construction (Rp 4.82 million vs Rp 3.31 million).

The highest male worker wage is recorded in Publishing and Telecommunications Activities at Rp 5.37 million, while the highest for female workers is in Mining and Quarrying at Rp 5.67 million. On the other hand, the lowest wages for male and female workers are in Arts, Other Service Activities, Household Activities, and International Organisations at Rp 2.53 million and Rp 1.55 million, respectively.

The February 2026 Sakernas results indicate that workers’ wages positively correlate with education level. The higher the education attained, the greater the wage received.

“Workers with Diploma IV, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degrees receive the highest wage of Rp 4.77 million, while those with primary school education or below receive the lowest at Rp 2.23 million,” states BPS.

Thus, workers with Diploma IV, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degrees receive wages 2.1 times higher than those with primary school education or below. When examined further by education level and gender, male workers’ wages are consistently higher than females’ at every education level attained.

For workers with primary school education or below, male wages are Rp 2.51 million, while female wages are Rp 1.47 million. Meanwhile, male workers with Diploma IV, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degrees earn Rp 5.63 million, compared to Rp 3.99 million for females. The largest wage gap between male and female workers by education level is among those with Diploma I/II/III, at Rp 1.72 million.
