Retired General Try Sutrisno, Former Vice President, Passes Away; State Secretary Hails Him as Model of National Love
Indonesia mourns the passing of General Try Sutrisno (Retired), the nation’s sixth Vice President, who died on Monday, 2 March, at the Army Central Hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Soebroto in Jakarta. He was 90 years old.
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi paid tribute to Sutrisno as an exemplary son of the nation who embodied exceptional nationalist ideals. According to Hadi, Sutrisno’s dedication to national sovereignty never wavered throughout his life.
“He has set an example for all Indonesians on how to love our nation,” Prasetyo said in Jakarta on Monday.
Throughout his service, Try Sutrisno was known as a steadfast guardian of the nation’s ideology. Prasetyo Hadi recalled how Sutrisno consistently emphasised the importance of preserving the purity of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution as the foundation of the state. He urged the younger generation to remain united in fulfilling independence amid increasingly complex global challenges.
Sutrisno’s funeral procession will depart from Sunda Kelapa Mosque to Kalibata Heroes’ Cemetery in South Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to lead the military funeral ceremony at Kalibata Heroes’ Cemetery.
The government coordinated with RSPAD throughout Sutrisno’s intensive care until his passing at the age of 90. All state protocol requirements have been prepared to honour his great service to the nation.
Try Sutrisno served as Indonesia’s sixth Vice President from 1993 to 1998 during President Soehartos era. Prior to this position, he had a distinguished military career, including serving as Commander of the Armed Forces (now TNI) from 1988 to 1993.
Until his final years, Sutrisno’s spirit of service remained undiminished. He remained active as Vice Chair of the Advisory Board of the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP) for the 2022–2027 term. His presence at major state events, including the Independence Day Ceremony at Merdeka Palace, the Annual MPR Session, and TNI Anniversary celebrations, symbolised the consistency of a true soldier who loved his homeland until his last breath.
The TNI Army leadership expressed deep condolences over the passing of Retired General Try Sutrisno.
