Restore Mobility: BNPP and Community Reopen Road Access Following Floods in Aceh
The Indonesian National Border Management Agency (BNPP) continues to accelerate the restoration of flood-affected regions in Aceh Province by deploying heavy machinery including excavators and dump trucks.
These efforts are focused on clearing main road access blocked by mud and sand deposits in Pidie Jaya, Bireuen, and Aceh Tamiang districts, to restore community mobility as quickly as possible.
BNPP Secretary Makhruzi Rahman emphasised that the deployment of heavy equipment is intended to expedite normalisation of transportation routes that serve as vital arteries for residents’ activities.
“We are deploying excavators and dump trucks to help accelerate the clearance of public roads still blocked by mud and sand so that community activities can resume,” he stated in a written statement received by Kompas.com on Wednesday (11 March 2026).
Makhruzi stated that road clearance is also being undertaken through a cash-for-work scheme, which provides direct employment to residents.
Makhruzi explained that the programme was an initiative of Interior Minister Tito Karnavian, who serves as head of BNPP and the head of the Post-Disaster Acceleration Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Task Force (Satgas PRR) for Sumatra.
The programme aims to make the post-disaster rehabilitation process more effective whilst providing direct positive impact on the community’s economy.
“Through the cash-for-work scheme, residents not only have their road access restored, but also gain temporary employment opportunities that help recover their daily lives,” said Makhruzi.
Through this mechanism, residents do not merely receive assistance but also earn income from participation in the area’s recovery activities.
Makhruzi noted that mud clearance operations using heavy machinery have already been carried out at two locations in Pidie Jaya district: Mancang village and Dayah Usen village, Meurah Dua district.
In Bireuen district, clearance work was conducted in Kubu village, Peusangan Bineh Krueng district.
Meanwhile, in Aceh Tamiang district, similar activities took place in Lando village, Rantau district.
Each district received support from two excavators and two dump trucks.
Overall, BNPP deployed six excavators and six dump trucks to support the acceleration of road clearance efforts across the three districts.
