Residents welcome the new Sarinah pedestrian overpass, urge cleanliness to be maintained
Sarinah pedestrian overpass (JPO) on Jalan MH Thamrin in Central Jakarta is now operational again after a revitalisation. Residents welcomed the reopened Sarinah JPO. One resident, Ghea from Bogor, West Java, praised the JPO’s appearance, describing it as ‘cool’. ‘The pedestrian overpass is cool. That’s why I came from Bogor to here to see Sarinah and the overpass because it’s new,’ Ghea said at the Sarinah JPO on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. She admitted she spent time ngabuburit waiting for iftar around Mal Sarinah. She took several photos of herself at the JPO. ‘I did it deliberately to pass the time before iftar; the overpass is nice, so I asked someone to take my photo. There is also at Bundaran HI an exhibition, something nice for tonight, so I’ll enjoy the city atmosphere while ngabuburit.’ Ghea said the Sarinah JPO makes it easier for residents to reach Mal Sarinah, especially for those using Transjakarta buses. ‘It’s very convenient—from getting off Transjakarta, you just go up the stairs and you’re at Mal Sarinah. It doesn’t complicate things,’ she said. Daffa, a worker around MH Thamrin, also welcomed the Sarinah JPO. He said the JPO adds crossing options, particularly toward the MH Thamrin Transjakarta stop. ‘There’s also, near the intersection, a pelican crossing. With this JPO, it adds options, especially helping those who are prioritised,’ he said. Daffa also shared his experience using the Sarinah JPO. He hopes the JPO remains clean and continues to benefit the public. ‘My experience is good; perhaps because it’s still in good condition. It already has decorations, the lifts are working, it’s clean, and so on. My hope is that it stays clean and continues to be useful to the community,’ he said. For reference, the Sarinah JPO can be accessed by lift from in front of Mal Sarinah and from in front of the Bawaslu building. From the Transjakarta MH Thamrin stop, visitors can use the lift and escalator stairs. Detikcom’s observations at the site on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, showed the Sarinah JPO decorated with Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr themes on the bridge ceiling, and it appeared clean. A number of residents had already begun using the JPO, with some seen taking photos. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung had previously inaugurated the Sarinah JPO. The JPO is described as Jakarta’s first JPO owned by the city. ‘This JPO is Jakarta’s first to be owned; it was inaugurated by Bang Ali Sadikin on 21 April 1968. This is historic, and today we revitalise it to make the JPO disability-friendly,’ Pramono told reporters after inspecting the JPO in Sarinah, Central Jakarta, on Monday, 2 March.
