The waste sorting programme from households in Rorotan, North Jakarta, is still facing education challenges because not all residents are accustomed to sorting waste.

Cadre of the RW 07 Waste Sorting Movement in Rorotan, Nani Darsonowati (46), said that the waste sorting programme actually began last year before being intensified again in February 2026.

However, residents’ habits still need to be educated to run better.

“The obstacle is indeed gradual, because not everyone is the same. The mindset and social conscience of each resident are not all the same yet. So until now, we continue educating without stopping to sort waste,” said Nani when met by Kompas.com in Rorotan, North Jakarta, on Friday (8/5/2026).

“There are also residents who say, ‘Why are we told to sort? Is the waste we sort going to be weighed and get money?’” she added.

Nevertheless, Nani said that residents’ enthusiasm is starting to increase after waste sorting facilities such as buckets, drop point bins, and losida (kitchen waste pits) were provided in the residential area.

Organic waste from residents is now collected three times a week to be processed at the TPS 3R RW 07. The organic waste can also be directly disposed of into the prepared losida.

The Head of Rorotan Subdistrict, Ahmad Fitroh, said that waste sorting in his area is currently focused on two types of waste, namely organic and inorganic.

However, this is still a challenge because not all residents are ready to change their habits.

“The community doesn’t all understand the connection with sorting waste into four types. We start with two first,” said Fitroh when met by Kompas.com on Friday.

“When education enters, the community finally feels that their home doesn’t smell anymore. Because after sorting, the organic waste is disposed of the same day,” he explained.

He emphasised that waste sorting education must indeed be carried out together by involving organisation administrators and community elements such as RW, PKK, Dasawisma, and jumantik.

“From there, I am confident that the institutions formed by the government are actually many. We collaborate all of them to set an example for the community,” he added.
