Residents of Mataram and surrounding areas are beginning to flood traditional markets in search of imported second-hand clothing ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah. One of the markets experiencing particularly heavy footfall is Pasar Karang Sukun in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), which is renowned as a paradise for second-hand clothing.

According to observations, the market located on Jalan Amir Hamzah is not only crowded with residents of Mataram, but has also become a popular destination for residents from Dompu to Sumbawa. Nearly all market stalls are occupied by shoppers. Some are busy checking the quality of second-hand garments, whilst others are enthusiastically hunting for branded second-hand clothing.

“I came here specifically because new stock usually arrives on Fridays. I’m planning to wear whatever I buy for Eid,” said Anggi, a resident of Mataram, on Friday (13 March 2026).

Anggi arrived at Pasar Karang Sukun alone around 10:00 am local time. She brought approximately 150,000 rupiah to search for imported second-hand clothing until 1:00 pm. “I’m looking for plain dresses, jeans, imported cardigans, and denim jackets,” she added.

“With 150,000 rupiah, you can certainly get four types of clothing if you’re good at negotiating with traders. Praise be, I’ve already found a dress, cardigan and denim jacket. What I still need is jeans. My target is to find Uniqlo or Levis brand jeans,” explained Anggi.

Similarly, Cidam, a student from Dompu, also deliberately came to Pasar Karang Sukun to find several garments for the Eid occasion. Cidam was searching for several tops.

“I got a recommendation from a friend who said the clothing here is good quality and definitely cheaper. Despite the lower prices, the quality of the clothing here is quite good if you’re careful in your search,” explained Cidam.

“I brought a budget of 100,000 rupiah—I’m only looking for tops. After I finish shopping, I’ll head straight home to Dompu. So I need to be careful to find good quality items. I’ll take my time; I’m sure I’ll find something,” said the University of Mataram student.

Yadi, one of the traders at Pasar Karang Sukun, stated that the number of visitors shopping for second-hand clothing continues to increase seven days before Eid al-Fitr.

“It starts getting busy in the last 10 days of Ramadan. People start looking for the specific types of clothing they want. Some are looking for dresses, jeans, hoodies, trousers and embroidered gowns. This weekend will probably be even busier,” said the resident of Narmada, West Lombok.
