Residents Demand Barriers for Excavation Pits in Rasuna Said Revitalisation Project
JAKARTA — Residents have demanded that excavation pits from former road median areas in the Rasuna Said revitalisation project in Kuningan, Setiabudi, South Jakarta be equipped with protective barriers, citing safety concerns.
A resident, Doli (30), expressed support for the project, which aims to reduce traffic congestion in the area. However, he stressed that the safety of road users must be prioritised during the construction period.
“We residents are fine with the project as long as the objective is good. But this situation is frightening. They should install barriers, or at least iron coverings if work hasn’t started yet,” Doli said when interviewed at the location on Monday, 2 March 2026.
Some of the former monorail support pits have been covered with concrete, but numerous excavation holes of varying depths remain scattered along the road, extending to the front of Trinity Tower. Doli expressed concern that road users could fall into these pits, particularly at night.
“At night it’s dark, and I’m worried that people unfamiliar with this road might fall into those holes,” Doli said.
Another resident, Anto (40), shared similar concerns and hopes the project will be completed quickly to improve road safety and traffic flow. He noted that congestion in the area predates the monorail infrastructure.
“I just hope they finish it quickly and restore the road as it was before. It’s a complete mess right now,” Anto said. “This area has been congested for a long time, even before the monorail was built. Let’s see if this really helps reduce the traffic.”
The revitalisation programme was initiated by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung and is targeted for completion when Jakarta celebrates its 499th anniversary on 22 June 2026. The project encompasses pedestrian areas, water drainage systems, road widening, and landscaping improvements.
