JAKARTA - Residents in the vicinity are complaining about the odour from piles of rubbish at the Temporary Disposal Site (TPS) in UKA Complex, Koja, North Jakarta, which is disrupting their activities. Resident Lia (35) said the rubbish smell from the TPS is highly disturbing, even causing her to lose her appetite. “It stinks, it gives headaches, eating doesn’t feel good, it makes your head spin,” said Lia when met near the location on Wednesday (1/4/2026). “If there’s flooding, it gets even messier, reaching right here (in front of the house),” she added. According to her, this condition occurs frequently and impacts the daily comfort of residents. Another resident, Suntoro (40), stated that the TPS, which often overflows, makes the surrounding environment uncomfortable, including for traders operating nearby. “It’s pitiful for those affected. Houses are close by. The sellers are pitiful,” he told Kompas.com on Wednesday. The rubbish at the location is often not fully collected, leading to continuous accumulation. “It’s always leftover, leftover all the time,” said Suntoro. Based on observations by Kompas.com, the rubbish is seen scattered onto the road. The types of rubbish piling up vary, from food waste, plastics, wood, to damaged used mats. At the location, seven green rubbish carts were also visible, full and left piled up in the TPS area. Several residents were still seen disposing of rubbish there by throwing plastic bags containing waste from atop their vehicles.
