Research centers to earn royalties

JAKARTA: State research centers will benefit from royalties on their scientific products, so that they can have more funds for further innovations, a government regulation states.

State Minister of Research and Technology Kusmayanto Kadiman said on Friday that Government Regulation 20/2005 on the transfer of intellectual rights in technology and the results of research and development would provide incentives for researchers and stimulate more inventions.

The President signed the regulation on May 19.

Before the introduction of the regulation, revenue from scientific products went to the state coffers and it was the government, which distributed the research funds.

"There was a rush in revenues, but only a little went to the research centers," Kusmayanto said. The government has allocated an average of 0.05 percent from the state budget for research. -- Antara
