Requirements for president
Requirements for president
From Rakyat Merdeka
Apparently, the media has not yet shown much interest in the issues discussed by Nahdlatul Ulama's Bahsul Matsil (forum for settling crucial matters). The point is that the issues raised so far have been dull and superficial in nature.
During the course of its history, only once has this forum passed an outstanding resolution, that was when it rendered its total support for the New Order administration's determination to adopt Pancasila as the only state ideology.
Finally, using a string of logical references and argumentations in support of the idea, saying that a country based on Pancasila was an ultimate form of struggle of Indonesian Muslims, NU triumphed and became the most prominent Islamic organization in the country.
If the NU ulemas presently gathering in Sukabumi, West Java, could agree to implement a ruling for a jihad and to impose the law regarding bughot (an attempt to overthrow a government regarded as lawful under Islamic law) on those opposing the government, it could be considered the second most outstanding achievement ever made by the nahdliyin group.
In order to make those rulings accurate, Bahsul Matsail should also discuss the requirements of Indonesia's next presidential candidate. There are quite a few "yellow books" that can be used as references, one being Al-Ahkam A-Sulthoniyah, a much-favored book among NU people for its moderate attitude in elaborating the requirements for a leader, leader of communal prayer and head of state.
Under the pretext of an emergency, the requirements therein contained could be ignored by NU ulemas. By so doing, these ulemas would be expected to think and look to the future objectively.
If they only talk about bughot and jihad, people will tend to say that it is merely the work of confused ulemas who have lost their common sense. I suggest Mr. Achmad Bagya, the chairman of PBNU and also member of Supreme Advisory Council, take into account the above requirements, so that our people can realize that we have sensible ulemas, not confused ones.
