Minogue, Martinez to postpone baby plans

MELBOURNE: Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue and her French
boyfriend Olivier Martinez (shown in 2003) have had to postpone
plans to have a baby because of the singer's surprise bout with
cancer, according to media reports.

The London-based former soap opera star is recovering from
breast cancer surgery in her hometown of Melbourne, after
shocking fans last week by announcing she had been diagnosed with
the illness and had to call off a tour of Australia and Asia.
Martinez, an actor, was quoted as saying the couple had been
planning to have a child.

"We were going to start working on it after the tour was
over," Martinez was quoted as saying in New Idea magazine. "Now
it will be put off; not forever -- we pray and hope -- but for
the time being."

No details of Minogue's follow-up treatment have been
released, but there is speculation her fertility may be affected
if she has to undergo chemotherapy.

Another magazine, Woman's Day, reported that Martinez has
defied demands from Hollywood executives to leave Minogue's side
and fly to the Cannes Film Festival before returning to Los
Angeles to work on the movie The Snow Goose.

Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper printed a photograph
Monday of the 36-year-old singer wearing dark glasses and holding
Martinez's hand as she left a Melbourne hospital. A surgeon said
Sunday she had successfully removed a cancerous lump from
Minogue's breast on Friday.

Minogue was in Melbourne to perform her Showgirl tour when the
disease was diagnosed last week. The Australian and Asian legs of
her tour have been postponed indefinitely. --AP

Actor Warren Beatty says he would make better governor than

Beatty says he'd be better than Arnie

BERKELEY, California: Warren Beatty says he isn't ruling out
running for governor of California, and thinks he could do a
better job than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"I don't think anyone should ever rule public service out,"
Beatty said. "It's a way of saying, 'Take me out of the mix and
don't listen to me any more."'

The actor made the remark after giving a commencement address
to graduates of University of California Berkeley's Goldman
School of Public Policy. Beatty, who has been involved in
politics for years, played a senator in the 1998 movie Bulworth
and entertained the idea of running for the presidency six years
ago.

Beatty, 68, said he has "a real soft spot for actors even if
they are right wing," and has always liked Schwarzenegger. But
the former action star is a politician who should "rise to the
higher level of that calling," Beatty said, and not denigrate
fellow politicians by mocking them as "girlie men," as the
governor did of Democratic lawmakers last summer.

"Can't we accept that devotion to the building of the body
politic is more complex and a little more sensitive than devotion
to body building?" Beatty asked.

Schwarzenegger deputy press secretary Vince Sollitto said of
the criticism: "I'm sure it's nothing personal. Warren's just mad
at Republicans because he's afraid they're cutting off his Social
Security." -- AP
