Report: Iran Destroys US THAAD Radar System Worth $300 Million
Tehran – Iran has destroyed a critical radar system used to direct the United States’ missile defence in the Gulf in the early days of the conflict, Bloomberg quoted a US official as saying. Analysts said the damage created a significant gap in high-altitude surveillance. ‘If successful, Iran’s strike against the THAAD radar would mark one of Iran’s most successful attacks to date,’ said Ryan Brobst, deputy director of the Centre for Military Power and Politics at the FDD, to Bloomberg as reported by TRT, on Saturday (7 February 2026). Satellite imagery shows that the AN/TPY-2 RTX Corp radar and its support equipment — used by the United States’ Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system — were destroyed at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan in the early days of the war. CNN reported, citing commercial satellite imagery. The destruction of the equipment was subsequently confirmed by a US official. The radar’s value was reported by TRR as $300 million. Data compiled by the Foundation for Defence of Democracies (FDD) shows two Iranian attacks reported in Jordan on 28 February and 3 March. Initially, both attacks were reported to have been intercepted. However, the confirmed loss of the radar indicates a significant shift in Iran’s tactics.
