Replacement Constitutional Court Judge for Anwar Usman to Take Oath of Office This Week
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that the oath-taking for the candidate Constitutional Court judge replacing Anwar Usman will be held this week. The candidate will take the oath before President Prabowo Subianto. Prasetyo said the Presidential Palace has received the name of the Constitutional Court candidate from the Supreme Court. “It is planned as soon as possible this week,” Prasetyo said in response to the inauguration of the Constitutional Court judge replacing Anwar Usman, at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta, on Wednesday, 8 April 2026. However, Prasetyo declined to reveal the identity of the Constitutional Court judge who will replace the brother-in-law of the seventh president Joko Widodo. “It will be announced later,” Prasetyo said. Prasetyo added that the inauguration of the elected Ombudsman leadership for the 2026-2031 period is also planned to be held simultaneously with the oath-taking of the Constitutional Court judge this week. Anwar Usman’s term as Constitutional Court judge ended on Monday, 6 April 2026, after 15 years in office. Anwar was inaugurated as a Constitutional Court judge by the sixth President of the Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the State Palace, Jakarta, on 6 April 2011. He then continued his position as a Constitutional Court judge for a second term in 2016 and served as Deputy Chief Justice. On 2 April 2018, Anwar was elected as Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, replacing Arief Hidayat, for a term until 2020. The uncle of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka was then elected to the top leadership position of the Constitutional Court for a second term, namely the 2023-2028 term, before being dismissed for proven ethical violations. At that time, Anwar was deemed involved in a conflict of interest in deciding Case Number 90/PUU-XXI/2023 regarding the age requirements for presidential and vice-presidential candidates, known as Decision 90. That decision is said to have paved the way for Jokowi’s eldest son, who is also his nephew, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to run as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election contest. However, Gibran, who was 36 years old at the time, did not meet the minimum age requirement for candidacy set at 40 years.
