Remove anti-graft bottlenecks
Remove anti-graft bottlenecks
From Koran Tempo
Corruption in Indonesia has developed like a malignant tumor,
hence its elimination requires strong determination on the part
of all law enforcement agencies in order to deal with not only
minor cases but also major graft practices.
The government has issued a presidential instruction
authorizing the Corruption Eradication Commission to take anti-
graft measures, but many constraints have impeded the effort.
For the removal of such bottlenecks, the government will issue
a regulation in lieu of law to penetrate all the procedural
barriers standing in the way of investigation and trial.
According to Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes Sudono
Iswahyudi, the regulation will do away with the need for approval
for the examination of public officials from executive and
legislative institutions as suspects.
In addition, the regulation will make it difficult for the
prosecutor's office to release or suspend the detention of a
suspect under investigation, and for the judge to suspend the
detention of a defendant under trial.
In the case of the judge granting a suspended detention, a
special law enforcement unit has to be assigned to keep the
defendant under constant surveillance so that there is no chance
of escape.
With this regulation, all big-shot corruptors in the country
will hopefully be taken to court and public funds can be saved
for people's welfare.
