Remembering Try Sutrisno: Yusril Pays Tribute to Principled Statesman
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Penitentiaries Yusril Ihza Mahendra has remembered the Sixth Vice President of the Republic, Try Sutrisno, as a humble statesman, firm in principle, and dedicated to serving the nation with sincerity.
“He was a person of sincerity and unwavering conviction. In various national discussions, I witnessed his strong commitment to the constitution and the nation’s future,” said Yusril, as confirmed in Jakarta on Monday.
Yusril recalled his close relationship with the deceased, which had developed since the early 1980s, when Try Sutrisno served as Commander of Kodam Jaya in 1983.
He stated that this relationship continued when Yusril began working at the State Secretariat in 1993, coinciding with the early period of Try Sutrisno’s tenure as Vice President of the Republic.
During that time, he said he was tasked with preparing various presidential documents, including texts of vice-presidential speeches, under the direction of former State Secretary Minister Moerdiono.
“I occasionally met with Pak Try. He was very kind, friendly, and appreciative of us, who at that time were still considered the younger generation,” he said, recalling Try Sutrisno.
Yusril also expressed his deep impression of Try Sutrisno’s character, evident not only in his role as a state official but also in his simple and sincere personal demeanour.
At that time, his interactions with Try Sutrisno became more frequent on various occasions, including when Yusril served as State Secretary and was tasked by the Sixth President of the Republic, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, to communicate with Try Sutrisno regarding the idea of returning to the original text of the 1945 Constitution that was ratified on 18 August 1945.
Additionally, during several visits to Try’s residence in Menteng, Jakarta, Yusril said he was always received with warmth and kindness.
He considered Try Sutrisno an exemplary figure who demonstrated that service to the nation is not always shown through grand rhetoric, but through consistency, integrity, and humility throughout life.
For this reason, he expressed deep condolences over Try Sutrisno’s death, as the Indonesian nation had lost a military figure and statesman.
On behalf of himself, his family, and the staff of the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Penitentiaries, Yusril conveyed his best wishes.
“May God Almighty accept all of his deeds and worship, forgive all his shortcomings, and place the deceased in the best place by His side. To the bereaved family, may they be given strength and perseverance,” said Yusril.
Try Sutrisno passed away at the age of 90 at the Central Army Hospital Gatot Soebroto, Jakarta, on Monday. The body will be buried at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery, Jakarta, on Monday.
