Jakarta — The remains of Try Sutrisno, Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, arrived at a funeral home in the Menteng area of Central Jakarta on Monday, 2 March 2026, at approximately 09:24 Western Indonesia Time.
The body was brought directly into the residence for lying-in-state. Several notable figures were observed arriving at the funeral home to pay their respects, including former Commander of the Armed Forces General (Retired) Wiranto and several officials from the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP).
Sutrisno’s remains will subsequently be laid to rest at the Kalibata Heroes’ Cemetery.
Try Sutrisno passed away at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto hospital in Jakarta on Monday morning. He was Indonesia’s sixth Vice President whilst serving alongside President Suharto from 1993 to 1998.
Born on 15 November 1935 in Surabaya, East Java, Sutrisno was among Indonesia’s Vice Presidents to emerge from the military establishment. He was admitted to the Army Technical Academy (Atekad) as a cadet in 1956. In 1974, he was selected to become an aide-de-camp to President Suharto.
In August 1985, Sutrisno’s rank was elevated to Lieutenant General of the Armed Forces, and he was appointed Deputy Commander of the Army General Staff (Wakasad), serving alongside the then-Commander of the Army General Staff (Kasad) General Rudhini. Just ten months after his appointment as Wakasad in June 1986, Sutrisno was promoted to Commander of the Army General Staff, replacing Rudhini.
His tenure as Vice President concluded in 1998 and was succeeded by BJ Habibie following the General Assembly of the People’s Consultative Council. In subsequent years, Sutrisno served as a member of the advisory board of BPIP beginning in 2017.
