JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The remains of three Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) soldiers who were killed following an Israeli attack in Lebanon on 29-30 March 2026 are beginning to be repatriated to Indonesia. A farewell and honours ceremony for the remains of the three Indonesian peacekeepers, who were part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission, took place at Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut, Lebanon, on Thursday (2/4/2026). “Repatriation is the final form of respect for the fallen soldiers, as well as a manifestation of the state’s responsibility to the families they leave behind. Prayers and support from all Indonesians serve as a source of strength in accompanying the return of these national heroes,” stated the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its official statement, quoted from a press release by the Indonesian Communication Agency (Bakom), on Friday (3/4/2026). This is because the repatriation process in a conflict situation presents its own challenges. Under normal conditions, the journey from Beirut to Jakarta takes at least 17 hours. However, the current intensity of armed clashes at various points in the region, including due to the increased Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, has created limitations on movement. Nevertheless, the government is committed to ensuring that the repatriation process runs smoothly. Previously, Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Umar Hadi, also expressed deep anger and sorrow over the deaths of the three peacekeepers in Lebanon. He conveyed this at the start of his statement during an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York on Tuesday (31/1/2026) local time. “We cannot accept the killing of these peacekeepers. This is a great loss for Indonesia and also a great loss for all of us,” said Umar Hadi. Indonesia assesses that the series of attacks is not merely an incident, but a deliberate action to weaken and thwart the UNIFIL mandate as stipulated in UN Security Council Resolution 1701 regarding the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
