Remains of Bantargebang Waste Landslide Victim Taken to Police Hospital for Identification
Bekasi – One victim of a waste landslide at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Management Site (TPST) in Bekasi was recovered by a joint rescue team on Monday, 9 March 2026, at approximately 12:00 WIB.
The unidentified male remains were immediately evacuated and transported to Kramat Jati Police Hospital for identification purposes.
“The victim was immediately taken to Kramat Jati Police Hospital,” said Desiana Kartika Bahari, Chief of the Jakarta Search and Rescue Office, to media representatives on Monday.
She suspected the recovered remains belonged to a truck driver whose vehicle was discovered the previous evening on Sunday, 8 March 2026.
“The truck was found last night, but there was no victim inside. Therefore, it is likely that the victim found today is the driver of the truck we discovered last night,” said Desiana.
According to her account, the body was located not far from where the truck had been found previously.
“The remains were discovered approximately five metres from the truck found last night, buried under approximately ten metres of waste,” she stated.
“Previously, four deaths were confirmed this evening, bringing the total to five,” said Desiana.
Nevertheless, the rescue team continued its search for other missing victims.
“We still have four additional individuals we need to search for,” she noted.
The four missing individuals are believed to comprise one waste transport truck driver and three scavengers who were in the area when the landslide occurred.
Eko Uban, a rescue officer with the Bekasi Municipal Fire and Rescue Service, stated that the incident occurred suddenly whilst waste truck drivers were awaiting their turn to dispose of rubbish.
“When waste trucks were queuing to dump rubbish at approximately 14:30 WIB, the waste pile suddenly collapsed, burying the driver who was waiting his turn,” said Eko to media representatives on Sunday, 8 March 2026.
