The Head of the Papua Regional Office of the Religious Affairs Ministry (Kemenag), Klemens Taran, launched the Traveller-Friendly Mosque programme in Sentani, Jayapura District on Wednesday (11 March 2026).

“The Traveller-Friendly Mosque programme represents the commitment of Indonesia’s Religious Affairs Ministry in providing services to the community ahead of Eid al-Fitr,” he said.

He explained that Eid al-Fitr is always associated with the tradition of mudik (homecoming), in which people travel home to their hometowns to reunite with family.

He noted that the geographical conditions in Papua Province present unique challenges, making homecoming journeys require special attention to ensure they proceed safely, comfortably, and smoothly.

“Therefore, we need to ensure that journeys are not only safe, but also comfortable and smooth,” he said.

Through this programme, he hoped that mosques would function not only as places of worship, but also as centres of social service for communities undertaking homecoming journeys.

“The programme is also open to anyone passing through who needs a place to rest,” he said.

Through this initiative, Kemenag hopes that the Eid homecoming journeys this year can take place more pleasantly, safely, and comfortably for people travelling through the Papua region.
