Religion and gambling

From Warta Kota

Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso has stated that the city
administration has been unable to eradicate gambling and,
therefore, has offered a rational solution by providing
designated locations for gambling.

The Indonesian government bans any form of gambling, but
gamblers still take part in the illegal activity in the capital
city. Thirteen illegal gambling operations in various parts of
Jakarta have been revealed (Warta Kota, Oct. 10), besides a
number of unregistered lotteries and the like.

No wonder gambling dens exist as it enriches many segments of
society, such as hoodlums, players, bodyguards and dishonest
government officials who get kickbacks from the illegal activity.

Therefore it is true that gambling dens cannot be easily
eradicated as those who are actually assigned to eliminate the
dens have backed the unlawful games. The governor has offered
locations for gambling, which probably has prompted capital
owners and gambling operators to submit proposals.

Of course, it will be a new project that will generate money
if the governor's offer is accepted by the central government and
the various circles. All religions are against gambling,
including the opening of gambling dens approved by the
government.

Therefore, Governor Sutiyoso should handle the issue of
gambling carefully without ignoring the interests of all of
society.
