Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso has stated that the city
\nadministration has been unable to eradicate gambling and,
\ntherefore, has offered a rational solution by providing
\ndesignated locations for gambling.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian government bans any form of gambling, but
\ngamblers still take part in the illegal activity in the capital
\ncity. Thirteen illegal gambling operations in various parts of
\nJakarta have been revealed (Warta Kota, Oct. 10), besides a
\nnumber of unregistered lotteries and the like.<\/p>\n
No wonder gambling dens exist as it enriches many segments of
\nsociety, such as hoodlums, players, bodyguards and dishonest
\ngovernment officials who get kickbacks from the illegal activity.<\/p>\n
Therefore it is true that gambling dens cannot be easily
\neradicated as those who are actually assigned to eliminate the
\ndens have backed the unlawful games. The governor has offered
\nlocations for gambling, which probably has prompted capital
\nowners and gambling operators to submit proposals.<\/p>\n
Of course, it will be a new project that will generate money
\nif the governor's offer is accepted by the central government and
\nthe various circles. All religions are against gambling,
\nincluding the opening of gambling dens approved by the
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
Therefore, Governor Sutiyoso should handle the issue of
\ngambling carefully without ignoring the interests of all of
\nsociety.<\/p>\n
